Musical Theater – April 2018

Our Town, the great American play by Thornton Wilder, will be performed on May 3, 4 and 5, 2018 at 7pm in the MV Auditorium. Ticket info coming soon!

Improv Nights will take place for the last time this school year on May 18, 2018 at 7pm in the Black Box.

Tri-M Music Honor Society – April 2018

The Tri-M Music National Honor Society at Metea has a membership of 282 students from grades 10 through 12. Tri-M is a service-oriented student-run organization.  Members are required to attend monthly meetings and fulfill various school-improvement  and community relations volunteer duties in order to fulfill their membership requirements. Tri-M members work together to raise public support and awareness for music programs and help students reach their full potential.

Monthly meetings are scheduled at 6:45 AM (Tuesdays) in the auditorium on the following 2018 dates:  5/1.

The Tri-M recital was on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 7pm.

The Tri-M faculty advisors are Mrs. Boddy and Mr. Kaminsky.

2017-2018 Tri-M Induction Ceremony & Reception

On September 28, 2017 the Metea Valley High School Tri-M Chapter 6072 inducted 282 members into the organization for the 2017-2018 school year. Metea’s Tri-M Chapter is one of the largest in the nation.

Before the ceremony,  music was provided by the Metea Valley Jazz Combo. Kimmy C., Tri-M President continued the evening with the welcome and introductions and Mr. Devany with opening remarks.

The 2017 Honorary Lifetime Recipient was Mr. George Quinlan, Jr., President & CEO of Quinlan & Fabish Music Company whose acceptance speech motivated the audience to reach for their dreams.  Through the years, Quinlan & Fabish has sponsored numerous workshops, clinics, and educational events for Chicagoland band and orchestra directors, students, and student teachers with the company helping to further Music Education throughout the Midwest. Since 1959, Quinlan & Fabish has helped to make participating in band and orchestra easier for countless numbers of students, parents, and teachers.

The induction ceremony was closed by Dr. Echols with words of congratulations and was followed by a reception in the auditorium lobby for Tri-M members, their families and guests.

Notes to Know – April 2018

The Association of Music Parents (AMP) at Metea Valley High School supports the students and staff of the music department.  Every music parent is automatically a member of AMP. There are no fees to join. You will receive monthly newsletters and volunteer information from our organization. Thank you for supporting music at Metea!

  • New to Music at MVHS? Be sure to visit the Metea Music website, and you’re invited to attend MV AMP meetings. If you have any questions, please contact AMP board members.
  • Dinners Out. April 24 is our next Dinners Out at Chik-fil-A by Fox Valley Mall.  Be sure to come out to the restaurant ALL DAY for cow appearances, games, events, and prizes — all while supporting AMP!  AMP continues to sponsor monthly dinners out where each local restaurant donates a percentage of the date’s proceeds directly to AMP.  Please see the “Dinners Out” article for details.
  • Help Needed! Chair and volunteer positions are open for some of our annual events, and whether you’re a band, chorus, or orchestra parent, we could use your help! See How Can I Help? article.
  • MVHS Music Alumni. If you know a former MVHS fine arts student or parent, please invite them to like the AMP Facebook page and follow the AMP Twitter account (@MeteaAMP) and Instagram (@metea_AMP) to find out current happenings in the music program. Alumni won’t want to miss updates about the alumni tent at the Fine Arts Festival on May 19. All MVHS fine arts alumni are invited to stop by! See more details here.
  • Next AMP Board Meeting. All parents with a student(s) in Metea’s music program are welcome to attend the next AMP meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 4pm in Room A133.
  • Recordings. Please note, sound recordings from concerts are available on Sound Cloud using the password mustangs. Please note: Collage Concerts are NOT on SoundCloud.
  • Music Decals. Decals for vehicles can be purchased from the Sports Boosters window in the Commons and at all sporting events. These include: band, orchestra, chorus, madrigals, etc.

  • In the News. 
    • MVHS Faculty, Dr. Mark Liu. Congratulations to Metea Valley High School’s very own Dr. Mark Liu for being selected as the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra 2018 Music Inspiration Award winner! This award honors school band/orchestra directors or private lesson teachers who inspire and encourage CYSO student musicians. Each year students have the opportunity to nominate a teacher who inspires them for this honor. Dr. Liu was selected as the 2018 recipient. The award will be presented at this spring’s Symphony Orchestra concert at Orchestra Hall on Sunday, May 20 at 7:30pm.
    • Parent, Kelly Sherwood. Congrats to Kelly Sherwood, chairperson of MV’s Theater Parents, on being recognized as the BMO Harris Bank District 204 Volunteer of the Month (March 2018)! Thanks for all you do for MV Fine Arts! Read the announcement here.
    • Best Communities for Music Education. Indian Prairie School District 204 was one of 10 Illinois school districts named Best Communities for Music Education by he National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. Designations are given to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and consistent access to music education.   • Class of 2018 Senior Plaques & Pictures. Senior parents, keepsakes are available of your senior student along with their peers in band, orchestra, or chorus. You can purchase a senior plaque (that has the group photo) with all the names engraved and/or two sizes of group photos. Students can view these plaques and photos in their band, orchestra or chorus classrooms. Order forms can be accessed here are due to the music teachers by April 20, 2018. Plaques and photos will be delivered to the classrooms by May 15, 2018. For gift order please email Shyamla Narayan at mvampvpband@gmail.com.
  • Senior Music Student Scholarship. If your music student is a senior this school year and has been enrolled in a curricular music class for 8 semesters, please check out the Saraswati Senior Music Scholarship information. Deadline to apply is Friday, April 20, 2018.
  • Marching Mustangs. The Marching Mustangs is part of our music department’s strong foundation of excellence in music education. Orchestra and chorus students are also encouraged to join, as there are spots in the Pit Percussion and Color Guard where they can participate. In the 2018-2019 season, the Marching Mustangs will be performing a halftime show featuring music of Disney including selections such as: Incredibles, Mickey’s Fantasmic, Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast, I Just Can’t Wait To Be King, This Land, The Circle of Life. You must register to be in Marching Mustangs by Thursday, April 26, 2018. To register for Marching Band, complete this form.
  • Tri-M. The last Tri-M meeting is Tuesday, May 1 at 6:50am. See the Tri-M article for details.
  • Musical Theater. Don’t miss the play “Our Town” on May 3-5 at Metea. See the Musical Theater article for details.
  • Awards Night. The Music Awards Night is Tuesday, May 8 at 7pm. Parents, you can help make the night a success; see what’s needed here. Please see details in the May Events article.

  • Fine Arts Festival. This year the Fine Arts Festival is on Saturday, May 19, 2018. AMP facilitates concessions, organizes volunteers and more. See the May Events article for details and check your student’s rehearsal and performance schedule here.
  • Summer Music. Save the dates! Check out the summer music offerings here. Registration is now open. Register before May 15 and save $10 (save $5 for Sing, Drum, Play).
  • Summer Music Camp Scholarships. All current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students at Metea Valley enrolled in a curricular music class for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school year may apply for a summer music scholarship. The scholarship must be for a performance-based music camp. Applications are due Friday, April 20, 2018. Awards will be announced at the May 8 Awards Night.
  • Intro to Music Theory Class. Piano students, future music majors, and those who are interested in learning more about music theory… please consider taking the summer on-line Intro to Music Theory class this summer!  This class is a pre-requisite for the year-long AP Music Theory class.  More info is found here: https://www.eloconsortium.org/academic-year.html

  • Clinician Visits 2018. Did you know how many music clinicians worked with Metea music students this year? So many wonderful opportunities with Rich Moore, Tom Sharpe, Peter Erskine, Susan Moninger, Vijay Gupta, John Climer, Katie Ernst and more! Ask you music student for details!
  • MIOSM Concerts. Music in our schools month concerts on March 8, 13 and 15, 2018 were a success! Thank you to all students for great performances and to families for their continued support of the fine arts program.

Orchestra

  • 9/20 – Dr. Liu sells apple pies at McDonald’s (1376 N. Rt. 59) during PTSA fundraiser.
  • 10/21 – Mustang Strings performed at the Troop 81 Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast held in the MVHS Commons.
  • 11/18 – Cello Choir & Splash of Color performed at Monarch Landing, senior living facility in Naperville.
  • 12/4 – String Quartet Performance at Kiwanis Club Christmas Party, Naperville.

Band

  • 9/3 – Marching Mustangs performed at Band Day 2017 at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with 21 school bands along with the Marching Illini.
  • 9/4 – Marching Mustangs marched in Aurora Labor Day parade.
  • 9/23 – Marching Mustangs performed at D204 Marching Band Festival held at MVHS.
  • 9/26 – Marching Mustangs performed at Oswego High School.
  • 10/21 – Jazz Combo performed at Troop 81 Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast held in the MVHS Commons.
  • 1/15 – Metea Valley Jazz Combo performed at the Dr. King Dinner in Aurora.
  • 2/11 – Symphonic Winds performed at the inaugural Batavia Concert Band Festival.

Chorus

  • 8/21 – Chamber Singers teach Alma Mater and Victory Song to Metea Faculty at Teacher Institute Day at MVHS.
  • 8/21 – Muses performed at the Aurora Back to School Fair.
  • 9/18 – Chamber Singers performed at Augustana College.
  • 10/21 – Muses and Apollo were guest performers at the Troop 81 Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast held in the MVHS Commons.
  • 10/23 – Muses were guest performers at the Hill Middle School Chorus concert.
  • 11/9 – Chamber Singers performed at Rotary Club.
  • 11/17 – Treble Singers performed at Notre Dame St. Mary’s College Women’s Choir Festival.
  • 12/4 – Madrigals performed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Naperville.

RECAPS

  • Diva Day. This fun event was on January 16 for girls from 4th through 9th grade from Hill, Granger, and Still and their feeder schools. MVHS music students worked with the younger students that evening.
  • ILMEA. MVHS music faculty attended the Illinois Music Educators Association conference in Peoria from January 24-27. Ten MVHS music students went to state for ILMEA. Congratulations to: Claire Baranyk – Tenor Sax; Jordan Brosius – Clarinet; Kimmy Chuang – Cello; Elise Kim – Violin; Alexander Roe – Violin; James Sefton – Violin; Arjun Sundararajan – Viola; Aubree Curtis – Alto (Voice); Arjun Ramacharandran – Bass (Voice); Sarat Sagaram – Tenor (Voice).
  • Montage Concert. All extra-curricular music groups performed in the auditorium on February 1, 2018.
  • Musical Theater. Make a Scene and Improv were performed in February. See the Musical Theater article for details.
  • Organizational Festival. The February 19th event was hosted by Metea Vally High School.  Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Strings, Varsity Singers, Treble Singers, and Chamber Singers performed and participated in music clinics with university professor clinicians.
  • Tri-M Recital. The Tri-M recital was on February 20, 2018 at Metea.
  • Solo & Ensemble. The annual Solo and Ensemble District event at Waubonsie Valley High School occurred on February 24th. Soloists and Group Ensembles performed a selection of their choice for adjudication.

May 2018 Important Music Dates

Music Awards Night

Tuesday, May 8, 2018 7pm @ Metea

Awards Program. The Music Awards Night is a special night for all students to celebrate their many accomplishments during the past school year. The music faculty encourages students to dress up (suits & ties/dresses) for the event.

Dessert Buffet. Following the program in the MVHS auditorium, the Association of Music Parents will host a dessert buffet in the auditorium lobby. We are only asking for an hour (or more) to help with set-up, serving, or clean-up.  Please consider this volunteer opportunity. Fine Arts Festival

Saturday, May 19, 2018 8am – 4pm @ Metea

Help with concessions. During Fine Arts Festival, help is needed for concessions. AMP can use your help, even if just for a short time between your student’s concerts — please indicate when you need to step out for a concert. Sign up information will be available soon. Check your student’s performance and rehearsal schedule here.

Help with the Alumni tent. During Fine Arts Festival, help is also needed for the MVHS Music Alumni tent. We need your photos too!
